Halloween on Harrison

I guess nearly every US city has one of these — a neighborhood or street that really ‘does’ Halloween.  In Boise, that’s Harrison Blvd.  Harrison is a lovely tree-lined thoroughfare with a wide grassy median and truly amazing (read: large) old homes.  Some of these come complete with lions and columns on the front porch.   Nearly everyone who lives here embraces the event with extensive lawn displays.  The community responds by bringing their children from all over the region to trick-or-treat here. It’s not unheard of for any given home to see 3000-4000 inidviduals seeking candy handouts.  My wife and I have followed this annual phenomenon from our remove in SE Boise and, in spite of numerous invitations from friends who live in the area,  have never ventured out to experience it.

Until this year.

One of the interesting things about our current “homeless” and transitory lifestyle is that we get to experience things we never would have other wise. In this case, it’s Halloween on Harrison.  Our current temporary gig is a suite of rooms in a stately place with a vivid history, but more on that later.

Last night was an event unlike anything we’ve ever seen. In the (uncharacteristic) piece of foresight, city officials closed off the boulevard to car traffic, turning the night into a pedestrian friendly community street fair. The overall vibe was upbeat, inviting and just plain fun.  Our lovely friend-and-owner hosted a pot-luck at the place and kids were everywhere. Here’s a shot of some of the folks assembled on the front porch:

And here’s the view from the front porch as things started getting interesting, around 6:00 PM.

Later, after dark, we wandered the street and stopped to enjoy some live music

But the pictures don’t do it justice. It was a great evening and I’m glad we had the chance to experience it.
