Green Bars and Hot Water

It’s not very often we get any notice at all from the New York Times, unless it has something to do with our football team.

Book Review: Beyond Growth

Over the past two years, I’ve read lots of books on the general topics of sustainability and energy. I thought it might be fun to talk about them in my blog, and invite discussion with others who have read these or similar books.

1,000 miles and counting…

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I set a goal for myself at the beginning of the year to rack up at least 1000 miles commuting on my bicycle.  As of November 4th, I hit that goal!

Just before the the target!

Here are some of the stats for my commute.  I have a choice of several routes, but generally I take a direct, surface street route in the morning (side note, the street I ride on is built on top of the old Oregon Trail!).  In the evening, I take a more circuitous road along the green belt bike path. Very nice.  According to my nifty iPhone app (man, am I addicted to this thing) the roundtrip is just about 7 miles.  Assuming  48 work weeks, that comes to 240 days of work for a total of 1,680 potential commuter miles.  So 1,000 miles would be 60% of my commuting miles by bike. Seemed reasonable at the time and, indeed it was.  With about 6 weeks left in the year (the university is essentially closed for the last two weeks of December, I’ve hit the target.

We’re headed into the rainy season, so  in addition to short days, I’m likely to take the bus or arrange to telecommute a bit more often for the next few months, but I’m certain the total will continue to grow.

Back from hiatus!

Greetings green-blog followers!

Just a quick note to let you know that I’m back from my hiatus.  Originally I planned to be back blogging in the fall.  Technically, I was correct but I was hoping to be starting sooner rather than later.  But what the heck, here I am and I’ll be back once or twice a week, commenting on anything that strikes my fancy, from sustainability on college campuses to the current legislation working its way through congress.
